Tarot Harlequin Bag

A staple in my crocheting family is Tunisian crochet. For decades, my grandmother and my aunt made Tunisian square blankets. They’d have them at the ready to change up their living room or for baby showers and graduation presents. Of course, one of the things they taught me to make was a giant Tunisian square blanket.

I have one in my room, made from old yarn they gifted me and new pastel colors. I made it in college to fit my twin bed. Of course, being ambitious, I made it huge. Currently, it fits the dimensions of my queen bed. I don’t like to think of it as using too much yarn, but rather preparing for a future I didn’t know I was manifesting. Also, it happens to go well in my living room, matching the peach and teal walls I painted myself. It’s also a perfect size to share.

Of course, with a stitch like this passed down through my generations, I had to make something magical out of it. Since I’ve read tarot since I was twelve, I wanted to combine my favorite stitches into a bag that’s perfect to fit a tarot deck in.

The dimension of this project is to fit a deck of tarot cards (usually 2.75 x 4.75 inches (7 cm x 12.1 cm)), so the bag will be about 4 inches x 6 inches (10 cm x 15 cm) when finished. It’s a pretty, lacey box that’s designed to look elegant.

NOTE: I used multiple strands from the crocheting to sew my box shut, which is why the stitching looks bulky. To create the same effect, use at least 3 strands together to sew (if they don’t all fit in your needle).
